Luckily Alexandra, Yea, Eildon and the local areas escaped the ravaging bushfires of February 2009, and now even the areas worst affected areas are coming back to life as the trees re-sprout and the damaged homes are gradually replaced. Hopefully, the traumas for all those affected will be healed by Mother Nature in time. Recent rains have brought back the beautiful green pastures and helped replenish the water sports havens at lake Eildon, which is now at a higher level than for several years.

At Athlone we have commenced calving for 2010 season and it seems like yesterday that the last season’s crop of calves were sent away for fattening. The lakes have been restocked with trout and guests have found up to 1 kg fish in both lakes, though they do not commit to the hook easily!. We are preparing to sow a winter oat crop in some paddocks and a new ornamental pond is under construction in the 5 acre gardens.

We have also reached agreement with Bicycle Victoria to offer special midweek deals to all their members. This will encourage many more cyclists to enjoy the local rides through Thornton and over the Skyline ridge road with views over Lake Eildon, or a gentler ride around Alexandra. The proposal to open up the old Mansfield and Alexandra railway lines as cycle tracks will shortly bring a wide choice of gentle cycle trails in the region, with Athlone Park ideally situated to prove the base camp. We have had many happy cyclists enjoy attempts to catch one of our elusive trout after a stimulating bike ride. One heroic visitor recently braved a ride from Melbourne to the farm over the Black Spur Road via Healsville – but we recommend a gentle approach with the bikes on the bike rack for this bit of the journey!
